Six mimsy.me avatars scattered like cards: a pink-haired human in glasses and a glowing blue circuit suit, a spiky-haired vampire in a number 15 jersey holding a giant spoon, a werewolf in a tuxedo and eye patch, a human in headphones, a red headband, and a red circuit suit over green digital rain, a human in a bamboo hat and orange robes, and a zombie in a laurel wreath with nunchaku at a rainy bus stop

For years I wanted to reinvent Brainchef, the 8-bit humans-against-zombies game I once drew parts for, as mememe: a three-sided battle of humans, zombies, and werewolves, with themes that rotate with whatever the internet is talking about. The game never got past rough prototypes, but its character creator did, and mimsy.me is that creator on its own. Pick a human, a werewolf, a zombie, or a vampire, layer on an outfit, headgear, an accessory, eyes, a mouth, and a background with the arrow keys, roll a random one, save snapshots, and download your avatar as a PNG.

After a try in 2023, Claude Code finally made it real in March 2026, and in October it added the randomizer, snapshots, and a few new parts it drew in SVG to match my original art. The source is open on GitHub, and the whole story is in this blog entry.
